Getting a Second Opinion: Important Considerations

Second opinions on patient conditions are increasingly common. This is also true in Pathology. At 4path, we understand that you may wish to have your slides reviewed by a second pathologist. We fully support your decision to seek second opinions and are happy to assist with the process. We also are happy to provide second opinions on materials that have been previously diagnosed elsewhere.

Some important considerations in seeking a second opinion are:

  1. Secondary evaluations may be limited because the second reviewer may not have access to all of the information available to the primary evaluating pathologist.

  2. Secondary opinions may have additional information that was available only after the first examination was performed, allowing a more accurate diagnosis or a different diagnosis than was possible at the time of the original evaluation.

  3. There may be minor differences in terminology between reports.

  4. The requesting patient is responsible for all charges for second opinions , even if the insurance company rejects payment.

After noting these considerations, at 4path you have two options:

  • 4path can provide second opinions on materials previously diagnosed at another laboratory, or

  • We can send out materials initially diagnosed by 4path for review by another pathologist.

To ensure proper handling, please download the appropriate form, and fill out completely and follow the instructions for delivery to 4path. Upon receipt, 4path will promptly initiate handing of your request.
